St Catherines Church Faversham

Welcome to our Church's website

Sirdoor John Betjeman in the Collins Pocket Guide to English Parish Churches has described St Catherine's as, "high and distinguished among the railways and breweries".

Christian worship has been offered in this place since well before the Norman Conquest, and this church, standing only three hundred yards from Watling Street at its nearest point to Faversham Creek, would have been a natural site for a settlement and church at any time after St Augustine and his monks came to Canterbury

The only trace of the Saxon building, however, which the Normans completely rebuilt, comprises fragments of Saxon stonework found during nineteenth century alterations, undated except for part of a doss arm dated to the early eighth century - but it is not known whether this would have been part of a preaching cross on this site pre-dating any church building, or evidence of an actual building already in place. The Norman church comprised the middle section of the present nave (without the side aisles) and some but probably not all the present chancel.

The Church of St Catherine, Preston is a Grade 2* listed building. St Catherine’s means friends, inclusion and being valued for who you are. Because of this, St Catherine’s is a thriving and vibrant church with all ages present where we grow in faith and numbers every day. We reach out into Faversham to welcome others to share what we have and the wonderful spirituality that abounds within our community. St Catherine’s is “high church” and tons of fun. We have a brilliant Sunday School that the kids love; they especially enjoy writing and performing puppet plays in the family services to wide appreciation. Our 14-member choir is outstanding and a recent survey highlighted the quality of music as a huge draw to our church. The prayer group meets every fortnight and we have a minimum of 2 services most weeks. There is so much going but we always ensure we grow together in Christ.

We take safeguarding very seriously at St. Catherine's; all appropriate leaders, Sunday School teachers and home visitors are DBS checked and undergo safeguarding training.
